Maturity is defined as the condition of full development and growth both physically and mentally. \u00a0Merely looking at the physical attributes is not enough because they vary dependent on numerous factors from genetics to the environment. \u00a0Therefore, it is more logical to look at it from the latter perspective. \u00a0<\/p>\n
In terms of mental development and growth, there are two things \u00a0that define a mature person. \u00a0First, the understanding that it is not just about them and second, the realization and understanding that it has always been about them. \u00a0It may sound contradictory, \u00a0but it is the truth of maturity.<\/p>\n
A mature person understands that it is not just about them. \u00a0They realize that they are but one in 7.5 billion people and that their existence is intertwined with that of everyone else. \u00a0They know that they must coexist with the others in order to survive in peace and live with ease.<\/p>\n
A mature person realizes and understands that it has always been about them. \u00a0They know that the world is full of many other individuals like themselves and because of that they know that they have a place that only they can fill. \u00a0They know how to coexist with others whilst retaining their identities. They do not get lost in or get swayed by the crowd but stand within the crowd with full knowledge about what they want and where they want to go.<\/p>\n
In essence, a mature person is a child at heart who has finally understood their place in the world. Being a child at heart in this sense means that they go for what they are passionate about with all their might, \u00a0enjoying every turn and evolving… Learning. \u00a0The only difference between a mature person and a child is the fact that they know that there is a bigger picture. Basically, maturity is ‘adulting’ without abandoning the child in you. Both are essential parts of maturity.<\/p>\n
A childish person will be despised, disrespected or dismissed and a person who abandons the child in them will be stuck in a state of lack riddled with unhappiness or discontent because they do what needs to be done at their own expense. The former wallows in ignorance, naivety and in most cases selfishness while the latter abandons themselves and their hearts desires\/passions under the guise of gaining stability in life i.e false selflessness. That is not living.<\/p>\n
Just like yin and yang, both aspects are necessary for a fulfilled life and finding that balance is what maturity is about. If you focus too much on yourself you will lose sight of other more important matters in your life like your relations that serve to help you move along. Abandoning yourself and your passion for the sake of ‘stability’ may help you survive but not live. How can you help others achieve greatness if you’ve never known greatness? How can you make others happy if you do not know happiness?<\/p>\n
A mature person is therefore someone who knows that the value of others is equal to their own. Therefore, they do not neglect one or the other; they strike a balance. So, are you mature?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
