In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It refers to those moments when life literally feels like it is giving you an unfriendly foot to spine bump just when you are in the moment. It has happened to me before, literally. I tripped on a non-existent rock while crossing one of the busy major multi-laned roads a few seconds after I thought to myself that, “hmm…I feel good today”. I didn’t get to the ground but I stumbled and flailed my arms like a mad chicken for what seemed like a lifetime before I managed to steady myself. I’ve never lived down that embarrassment.

That day, I realized if I had gracefully fallen, I may not have suffered (mentally) as much. From that and many other experiences that are too embarrassing to recount, I concluded a few things that I call the four rules of falling. A few nuggets you should keep in your pocket for these amazing times; For those moments when life kicks you to the ground.

Fall forward – This enables you to see where you are falling. You can best prepare for the fall and that in its self is progress.

Do not flail – It is natural to want to clutch at straws in your moments of descent which is okay. However, sometimes even you realize you are beyond the point of return, in which case it is better to relax and use the moment to meditate upon your current situation. You also get less injured in the process.

Prepare to get up – Fortunately, when you hit rock bottom the only way to go is up so, you should be ready to get back on your feet as soon as you can.

Rise with something – Even when you fall, literally you rise with dust, therefore in every situation, get back up with at least a lesson. Do not let that painful journey be for nothing.

Do not forget that life is about making choices. Every moment counts, even the falling ones. Remember that sometimes you have to lose gain. Failing is not the end of success but a part of success. A vital one at that because it is only through failure that you find weaknesses that you may have otherwise not seen.

Though this may sound disappointing, this article does not refer life’s stimulating or pleasurable effects or experiences in life.
