I did not see Anne again that week after we parted ways later that morning. I was late to work. My boss glared at me for the rest of that day. I spent the whole mid-morning to evening handling the inventories at the store.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood evening, I would like to see Sam,\u201d I spun around at the sound of my name. My boss was already at the counter.<\/p>\n
\u201cSam is handling inventories\u201d she started, \u201cwhat can I do for you sir?\u201d<\/p>\n
He was gazing right at me as he spoke to the Boss.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs it possible for me to\u2026\u201d the Boss cut him off.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome after work hours are done\u201d her tone was icy. He smiled. As he left, he regarded me one last time. He wasn\u2019t smiling. I froze.<\/p>\n
\u201cHave you seen the inspector from the City?\u201d the lady manning the grocery opposite our store asked me that evening.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo I have not. I am too busy minding my own life\u201d I responded with a smile. I wondered why the City sent an inspector to such a backwater town as ours. I heard that they were only involved in huge cases.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s weird. He was asking about you all day!\u201d I froze, \u201cDon\u2019t worry too much about it. He wanted your account of\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
My heart began thumping hard. My vision was blurry again. I felt that familiar tug at my heart.<\/p>\n
