Chapter 8: Hope<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMorning,\u201d said Esther, taking \u00a0a sit where he pointed.<\/p>\n

The farm manager\u2019s office was a mess. The shelves were overflowing with files and rope and all manner of farm implements.<\/p>\n

He stood two heads taller than her, behind his desk, working on an equally messy pile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes Esther, how can I help you\u201d he said to her.<\/p>\n

Esther clutched the envelop on her lap tighter, creasing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cUm\u2026I have a probl\u2026 I need help.\u201d She stated in a whisper.<\/p>\n

His looked up from the pile. A yawn escaped his lips. As he stretched his arms, the top shirt button popped to expose his hairy chest as well as the underlying muscle.<\/p>\n

Maybe 35 years\u2026 <\/em>she estimated.<\/p>\n

He sat down and stretched out his hand. It took her a moment, then she followed his gaze and handed him the envelop.<\/p>\n

His large arms extracted the letter within. He leaned on his elbow and read, mouthing quietly.<\/p>\n

She waited.<\/p>\n

\u201cHmmm\u201d he sighed finally, handing back the envelop and letter. \u201cSo\u2026what do you need?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to use my 4K Club allowance to clear my fee structure\u201d<\/p>\n

His brows furrowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, I haven\u2019t joined yet,\u201d she continued quickly, \u201cBut in my old school we used to get an allowance at the end of the semester and I would like to commit that money to my fees so that I don\u2019t have to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The farm manager shook his head and Grimaced.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t do that here\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat? Why? and what happens to all the money raised by the club?\u201d she asked, incredulous.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe money goes to the social welfare department who gives it out as a bursary to deserving students.\u201d The farm manager responded.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cSocial welfare? How can I apply to be included?\u201d she asked, hopeful.<\/p>\n

He shook his head again. \u201cYou can\u2019t\u2019. This year\u2019s beneficiaries were nominated and vetted last year. You\u2019ll have to wait try next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her heart sunk.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I wasn\u2019t here then. So, what do I do now\u2026.\u201d She said under her breath, \u201cMy mom won\u2019t have the money.\u201d Her composure threatened to crack.<\/p>\n

An unexpected shiver ran down her spine. His was wtching her.<\/p>\n

Taking a deep breath, she stood up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for seeing me.\u201d She said in a shaky voice then turned towards the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cA minute young lady,\u201d he called out, \u201cwhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Esther turned back and shrugged her \u00a0shoulders. \u201cGo home I guess\u2026\u201d she said, defeated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, \u2026I don\u2019t know if you would be interested or even qualified, but we have another club that could help you in the short term.\u201d<\/p>\n

Esther\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you heard of JV club?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it is an entrepreneurship club, students earn money for profits delivered. Of course, you can only earn as much as you bring in\u2026 and not everyone can join\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll try it!!!\u201d shouted Esther. A broad grin replaced the forlorn expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t already? Aren\u2019t you late?\u201d queried the farm manager. His eyebrows arched further upward and the inflection in his voice betrayed his surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t interested.\u201d Answered Esther. It was the truth.<\/p>\n

He chuckled\u2026this surprised her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d better hurry!\u201d he said waving her off, \u201cit may already be too late for you. The competition is Stiff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you so much!\u201d Gushed Esther before dashing out of his office. She was trying to recall everything Mary had told her about the club. Her hear pounded in her chest. A mixture of excitement and anxiety.<\/p>\n

Esther hurried towards the arts and crafts building. She had already missed the written test but she was not giving up.<\/p>\n
