SAM
CHAPTER 2
I did not see Anne again that week after we parted ways later that morning. I was late to work. My boss glared at me for the rest of that day. I spent the whole mid-morning to evening handling the inventories at the store.
“Good evening, I would like to see Sam,” I spun around at the sound of my name. My boss was already at the counter.
“Sam is handling inventories” she started, “what can I do for you sir?”
He was gazing right at me as he spoke to the Boss.
“Is it possible for me to…” the Boss cut him off.
“Come after work hours are done” her tone was icy. He smiled. As he left, he regarded me one last time. He wasn’t smiling. I froze.
“Have you seen the inspector from the City?” the lady manning the grocery opposite our store asked me that evening.
“No I have not. I am too busy minding my own life” I responded with a smile. I wondered why the City sent an inspector to such a backwater town as ours. I heard that they were only involved in huge cases.
“That’s weird. He was asking about you all day!” I froze, “Don’t worry too much about it. He wanted your account of…”
My heart began thumping hard. My vision was blurry again. I felt that familiar tug at my heart.
“I’m sorry! Are you alright….” I walked off before she said anything more. It was about 6 pm.
