SAM

CHAPTER 1

The body lay dismembered on the road. My heart raced and my vision was blurry. There was a lot of blood. My knees shook. I couldn’t move. My throat ran dry and despite the overwhelming desire to scream, I couldn’t.  I just stood there.

“Move…run!” I thought to myself. The sight of blood made me woozy. I could feel the warmth of my tears as they ran down my cheeks.

The scream behind me startled me to my core. The sight of the bloody mess that had once been a person was the last thing I saw as darkness engulfed me.

I woke with a start. My head throbbed. My heart wrung in pain as the vivid images of dismembered bodies poured into my vision. I was breathless.

“Sam?” the familiar voice rang in my ears, “Are you alive? You’ve been dead for an hour and a half you know”

I could feel the warmth of Anne’s body against my own. I opened my eyes. It took a couple of painful seconds to get accustomed to the brightness.

“So… it happened…?” I asked. My throat was parched.

“mm… hmm…” I could feel the calmness in her response, “It’s the third time this month.”
